Family and friends of Wayne Allwine, the voice of Mickey Mouse who died Monday of complications from diabetes, are remembering how the Glendale resident so embodied the modest and optimistic character he portrayed since 1977. Funeral services for the Walt Disney figure are pending and will be private. He was 62. He died holding hands with his wife, Russi Taylor, the voice of Minnie Mouse. “Walt [Disney] used to say, he put the heart and soul into Mickey Mouse,” Taylor said.

Disney Co. to honor employees The Walt Disney Co. will host its 21st annual Legends Ceremony at 4 p.m. Monday, honoring 11 employees for their contributions to the Disney legacy. This year?s Legends will include journalist Barbara Walters, sports broadcaster Frank Gifford and Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor, who provide the voices for Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Traditionally held in Legends Plaza on the Disney lot, the ceremony was started in 1987 with the induction of actor Fred MacMurray, who played the title character?

When Wayne Allwine exclaimed “Hiya, folks!” on the Disney lot Monday, people immediately recognized the voice. Allwine, who has been voicing Disney character Mickey Mouse since 1977, was inducted into the order of Disney Legends along with his wife — and voice of Minnie Mouse — Russi Taylor as part of the 26th annual Disney Legends ceremony. The couple were joined by nine other honorees — among them journalist Barbara Walters and sportscaster Frank Gifford — from the fields of music, Imagineering, television, animation and parks and resorts.

I really didn't want to go on the job interview, but my journalism counselor told me it would give me a boost to my career. I had only worked at the Valley College library for two weeks when professor Leo Garapedian called me into his office down the hall from the Valley Star college newsroom and told me that a copy girl position was available at the Burbank Daily Review - my hometown newspaper. I sat in the long hallway of the dark, dusty office of the Review, 228 E. Orange Grove Ave., waiting for then-managing editor Denny Duke.
