“The Scarlet Pimpernel” is Baroness Orczy’s classic tale of courage, adventure and romance, set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. It’s reincarnation as — would you believe — a musical comedy, is a perfect match for the talents and the superb production values of the Glendale Centre Theatre. Anyone who fell in love with the 1935 movie version and Leslie’s Howard’s totally-to-swoon-for Sir Percy Blakeney won’t need to make comparisons.

Glendale Centre Theatre will kick off its 62nd season and usher in 2009 with two performances of “Barefoot in the Park” on New Year’s Eve. It’s a favorite of theater regulars, said Tim Dietlein, who shares the executive producer title with his wife, Brenda Dietlein. “It’s a Neil Simon comedy and always very funny, and it’s a classic movie, too, that had Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, and it’s just one of our staples. We do it about every 12 years,” Tim Dietlein said.
