Burbank’s two national championship show choirs will strut their stuff together for the first time in a public show Saturday night to raise funds in support of local visual and performing arts education. Burbank High School’s In Sync will join Burroughs’ Powerhouse in the “All American Show Choir Super Show” at the Starlight Bowl. There will be pre-concert events beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the main attraction starting at 7 p.m. The event celebrates Burbank’s Centennial Anniversary of its incorporation while raising funds for the Burbank Arts for All Foundation, whose mission is to ensure every student in Burbank public schools has access to a quality visual and performing arts education as part of their core curriculum.

The show choirs at Burbank and John Burroughs high schools finished first and second, respectively, at a prestigious regional competition on Saturday, the latest in a string of successes that has launched the programs into the national spotlight in recent years. The 17th Annual Southern California Show Choir Invitational in Chula Vista regularly attracts the region’s elite high school programs. The top Burbank High show choir, known as In Sync, and the top Burroughs High show choir, Powerhouse, regularly compete for the top spots.

Tenth gala raises $161,000 for choirs A record amount of money was raised on behalf of the Burbank High School vocal music program during the 10th annual "Night of Magic" gala and fundraiser presented by the Burbank High School Vocal Music Assn. on Nov. 10. Proceeds from business and family advertising sales, opportunity tickets, Harmony Circle donations, table purchases and live- and silent-auction receipts totaled $161,171. The money raised will be used to support five competition choirs to defray costs for choir camp, clinicians, arrangers, costumes, choreographers, musicians and travel.

Irma Lemus MEDIA DISTRICT NORTH -- With an assist from some middle school students, the Burbank High School Vocal Music Program will hold its Spring Spectacular Concert on May 31 and June 1. The concerts will take place 7 p.m. at the school auditorium, 902 N. Third St. The Burbank choir will be joined by the John Muir Middle School choir. Burbank's show choir In Sync is among the top choirs in the state and recently returned from a national competition in St. Louis where it placed second.

Irma Lemus MEDIA DISTRICT NORTH -- The Burbank High School Choir In Sync performed with musician Kenny Loggins at the 10th annual TRIPOD award luncheon on May 12. TRIPOD is a non-profit organization that works with deaf and hard of hearing school children in Burbank. The awards ceremony, which was held at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, was hosted by actress Marlee Matlin. The choir and Loggins performed the theme from his recent soudtrack to "The Tigger Movie," as well as the choir's song, "A Few More Miles."

John Burroughs High School Choir Director Brendan Jennings will lead members of the school?s choir in a short performance of holiday music at the beginning of the meeting. The school?s show choir completed its annual Holiday Spectacular show the weekend of Dec. 8, where they performed classic and contemporary holiday music for the community. WHAT TO EXPECT This is not an action item on the agenda. Students will sing and Jennings may announce upcoming show choir events at the school.

Molly Shore Their voices ring out in harmonic jubilation and their bodies move in synchronization to the music. They are the members of the John Burroughs High School Powerhouse Choir -- 41 students who have brought home numerous regional trophies this year and are on their way today to the National Showstoppers Show Choir Competition in New York City. "We're hoping that our chances are good, considering our winning streak," said Powerhouse member Joseph Payo, the school's Vocal Music Assn.

Irma Lemus MEDIA DISTRICT NORTH -- Finishing near the top of a national choir competition puts her one step closer to reaching her goal of becoming a country singer, said Burbank High School student Tawny McCorkle. McCorkle, 17, placed second in the solo division at "Showstoppers 2000" Show Choir Invitation Competition, while her classmate J.D. Adams took fifth. They were two of the stars for the Burbank singers, who had a good deal of success at the prestigious competition held April 14 and 15 in St. Louis.
