John Francis GLENDALE -- Over the next few weeks, we will be featuring a number of food critics who are trying out for that position. We thought the variety would be fun for our readers. However, I wanted to take the first crack at the column. Not because I want to take over the food column, but because there is a restaurant that I think is one of Glendale's hidden treasures. Kozy Korner Thai Food offers some of the best food in town at unbeatable prices.

The Queen of England paid a visit to California in the not-too-distant past and expressed a hankering for some fresh fish. Fish King rose to the challenge. Located in northern Glendale, this popular market and eatery has been well known for the freshest of fish for the last 45 years. And Glendale residents know Fish King is the place to go for fresh seafood. They also cater as a wholesale vendor to the local restaurants in the area. Having a hankering myself for some decent seafood, we stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and took our place in the long, but quickly moving lines in front of the fish counter.

OLIVE PARK — If you’re going to beat the Crescenta Valley High softball team this season, the example provided by Burroughs over the first five-plus innings of Thursday’s Pacific League game at Olive Park isn’t a bad blueprint to follow. The Indians kept the Falcons’ lineup of dangerous bats fairly quiet and the scoreboard close, while rallying to tie the game in the bottom of the third. The game remained tied going into the sixth inning, but that’s where a three-run home run by Falcons center fielder Stephanie Ziemann sparked a six-run outburst over the final two frames to deliver an 8-2 Crescenta Valley victory.

Garrett Uribe Burroughs High pitcher Jackie Schulman has inherited an unusual role this season, that of being a starter who goes the distance of a closer, usually the first three innings or so. It's a strategy developed by Indian softball Coach Jennifer Gomez, conceived when Schulman filled in earlier this season when ace Sara Budrick was injured. Against Valencia High -- the No. 1 team in CIF Southern Section Division I -- Schulman started and was called back to close an 11-inning 7-0 Foothill League loss Thursday to the Vikings at Olive Park.

Erik Boal Frank Cuccinello said he would rather have faced a representative from Crescenta Valley or Tujunga Little League instead of the Burbank Bulldogs in his District 16 Tri-Cities Tournament opener. That's because the Dyrness Automotive Major Baseball coach had squared off with Coach Ron Gobble's squad seven times during the past two seasons, winning every time. But even with his past success, Cuccinello was visibly nervous before the contest Tuesday at Tujunga Little League Field.

Nestled among the dealerships on the Brand Boulevard of Cars is a cute little place called the Rush Hour CafĂ© & Grill. It specializes in Middle Eastern cuisine, but it ventures into Greek and Mediterranean territory as well. While there are dozens of other restaurants in Glendale that offer similar cuisine, done better, this place has a couple of advantages — location and price. If you’re shopping for a car or you work in the area, it’s a good place to drop in and get an inexpensive bite.
