Jeff Tully With humid temperatures in the 90s, the heat was on for a group of local softball players. Despite the hot weather Saturday, members of the Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Ponytail Softball League took part in the annual Softball Jamboree sponsored by the Foothill Civitan Club. The players celebrated the end of the season with their annual celebration, which included skills competitions, games, food and a lot of awards.

For the past seven years, I have had the privilege of coaching several young men in the Burbank Parks and Recreation Hap Minor Baseball Program. This is our final year as these boys, now young men, move on to high school. The commitment of time and energy is something I gladly gave to these kids, only to be outdone by the Burbank Civitans and their generosity in sponsoring this team every year. Not only did they sponsor my team, they also sponsor two other teams.

JEFF TULLY When it comes to watching baseball players run, hit and throw their way to success, forget about taking in any major league baseball games this weekend. Instead, if you want to see players taking part in the sport just for the fun of it, head to Olive Park this morning. Starting at about 9:30, the best players the Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Department leagues has to offer will be taking part in the 47th annual Hap Minor Baseball Civitan Day Jamboree.

Bits and pieces from the local sports scene. Shellmire, Del Castillo earn all-tournament honors : Aysia Shellmire and Davina Del Castillo helped the Burroughs High girls' basketball team go 5-1 in the San Luis Obispo Tournament last weekend. For their efforts, Del Castillo, who will be a sophomore, and Shellmire, an incoming senior, both were named to the all-tournament team. In the first game of the tournament, the Indians defeated host San Luis Obispo, 52-28.

OLIVE PARK — For most of the Hap Minor Baseball season, players were mainly concerned with team-orientated goals, like winning divisional titles. But at the 54rd annual Burbank Civitan Club Baseball Jamboree, it was a time for individual accomplishments in the Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services event Saturday at Olive Park. The day of events marked the end of the season for the city's premiere baseball league. Nearly 500 players from 41 teams took part.

Saturday at Olive Park, the players celebrated the ending of another successful season with the annual Ponytail Softball Jamboree, sponsored by the Foothill Civitan Club. Like their male counterparts a week earlier, the softball players invaded the park for their traditional skills competition, food, refreshmants and a lot of awards.

CIVITAN CLUB PLANS ST. PATRICK’S DAY BRUNCH The Burbank Civitan Club will have its 36th annual St. Patrick’s Day Champagne Brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 15 at The Castaway, 1250 E. Harvard Road, Burbank. A buffet brunch, including corned beef and cabbage, will be offered. The entertainment will include the song stylings of Sentimental Journey, singing in close harmony reminiscent of the Andrews Sisters, and the young Irish dancers from the O’Connor School of Irish Dance.

Baseball players get chance to show off their skills : It is as much of a summer tradition in Burbank as cookouts and dips in the pool. The Burbank Civitan Club Baseball Jamboree has become a part of summer for athletes in the Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Hap Minor leagues. The 52nd installment of the celebration will take place July 12t at Olive Park. Sixty-one teams from the league will take part in the event that begins with a parade at 9 a.m. that will wind its way to the park.
