The Redpath family may not turn out to be the Newsmakers of the Year for Glendale or Burbank, but at the moment, they certainly look like the bravest bunch around. The family of four made plans last summer to give up their rented Glendale home, the father resigned from his job as a supervising sound editor for Warner Bros., and they will spend a year traveling through Europe with their two elementary-school-aged children. When they made the decision the economy wasn’t exactly looking rosy, and in the months since, the stock market has tumbled, companies have laid off hundreds of thousands of workers, and the current and former presidents have raced to cap the damage.

Burbank resident Eric Norris must not have heard ? nobody walks in L.A. With tennis shoes cinched and sunglasses on, the 39-year-old sound editor is determined to take to the sidewalks. Throughout April and May, Norris is spending his weekends exploring the streets of Burbank and Los Angeles, gearing up for a hike he has dubbed "40-at-40." "When you run it's obvious ? you can only run so far," Norris said. "When you walk it's not so obvious." With his 40th birthday coming up, Norris decided to push the limits.

It was an adventure hatched during a bedroom book talk: Quit the job. Sell everything. Spend a year traveling with the kids. Bob Redpath and Brenna Gibson Redpath were sitting in their bed on a Saturday morning when it happened. The kids, Owen and Eleanor Redpath, were watching Saturday morning cartoons in the living room and the parents, inspired by literature on making the most of life and taking on difficult challenges, got to thinking about their own lives. Redpath was an Emmy- and Golden Reel-award-nominated supervising sound editor at Warner Bros.
