What is theology exactly? Is it the study of God? The written Word? Theology actually is the study of God and His relationship with the universe. It is the study of the doctrine of divinity and the specific form and system of this study. Theology is something we study to pass the truths of God on. It took me five years to attain a degree in theology, only three to become a psychotherapist. There is much depth to the study of theology. What about the definition of faith? Faith is the only avenue of coming near to God. You cannot overemphasize the fact that faith is essential to one?

Holding a church meeting in a pub may at first seem a bit odd, but so-called theology pubs - regular pubs and bars where meetings are held, usually once a week - are catching on across the country. According to Keith Anderson, a pastor in Philadelphia, “the world we live in demands that we do theology in a different way, on-the-fly, in different places, with different people....” He calls this “theology without a net.” Using blogs and social media, pub theologians introduce topics to be discussed at informal meetings in pubs.

What do we do when faith is in opposition with psychology? Perhaps these two disciplines do not have to be completely in disagreement. Often, if we are people of faith, it is the full truth that sets us free. An integration of theology and psychology can be very healing. That is what the evolving of Family Faith into Faith and Life is all about ? integration of faith and science, because they do not have to be polar opposites. I enjoy a practice as a therapist where I treat those who are professing Christians as well as those who do not practice a certain religion.

Dove World Outreach Center in northwest Gainesville, Fla., recently was at the center of protests surrounding a sign that had been placed by the church on its front lawn that read “Islam Is of the Devil.” What do you think about this? How far is too far when it comes to another church expressing its views about other cultures or religions?   I think that Jesus Christ himself is the final authority on how a church should relate to people and religions that deny him. His example and his specific teachings are recorded in the Bible (“the word of Christ”)

As a pastor, and as someone who is studying to be a psychotherapist, I believe in the integration of theology and psychology. Perhaps 10 years ago I would not have. Psychology is a behavioral science, like medicine is a hard science. There is data and research to support this discipline. When our bodies are sick, we need medication to heal them. Likewise, when our brains are not functioning properly physiologically, we need psychotropic medication. We would not withhold insulin from a diabetic and Christians should not be ashamed to take mediation when they have a physical problem functioning, such as in depression.

RANCHO DISTRICT — Roosevelt “Rosey” Grier is used to staring down hulking football players and meeting with large groups of people. But the guest speaker was taken aback during Burbank’s 33rd annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast at Pickwick Gardens Thursday. “Usually when I speak in front of black audiences, they say ‘Amen’ after I say something,” said the minister and former defensive tackle for the New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams.

Mark R. Madler When he first started on the Burbank police force more than 20 years ago, Craig Varner said he couldn't picture himself as part of the department's command staff. As a rookie officer, he was still only learning what police work was all about with help from one of his training officers, Thomas Hoefel, the current police chief. "I had some good mentors along the way," said Varner, 44, promoted in December to captain after Capt. Gordon Bowers retired.

In the mind of Providence High School teacher Reese Talley, history isn't just about memorizing dates and events. It's a living, breathing thing. "We do exactly the same thing that people did 4,000 years ago," said the American history teacher. "We are motivated by the same impulses and we respond to the same stimuli the same way." Talley's approach, which considers history as a study of psychology rather than a chronicle of events and dates, has guided his classroom at Providence since he began teaching there in 1992.
