Burbank's animated rose float cruised gallantly down Colorado Boulevard Monday morning in front of thousands of onlookers, many who had camped out overnight to see the 118th annual Tournament of Roses Parade. The float, "Free Dog Wash," featured a boy washing a soapy dog as several animals played around in the background. "Every one of these [floats] is wonderful," said Burbank City Councilman Jef Vander Borght. "I'm astounded on how beautiful they are and how much work goes into them.

If the Rose Parade is meticulous use of flora, then its annual spoof equivalent is all about raucous partying — and it had the hula dancers in fat suits to prove it. For 32 years the Doo Dah Parade in Pasadena has presented an unapologetic alternative to its esteemed inspiration, the annual Tournament of Roses Parade. And so on Sunday, a man dressed in a hairy black gorilla costume playing the bag pipes and other odd sights were just par for the course. “It’s kind of creepy, and it’s kind of fun — kind of like a weird dream,” parade watcher Cyndi McClain said.

Six photographs of Burbank’s float entries in the Tournament of Roses parades have been getting a face lift and are ready for their close-ups, thanks to a group of residents. The six photographs are part of a pictorial tribute of past floats starting with 1947 on view to the public along the second floor hall of the Burbank Central Library on Glenoaks Boulevard. Since February, several people have been working on a project to digitally restore the color in four of the photographs at the John Burroughs High School photo department, said Sharon Cohen, library services director.
