Grant Gordon It was Andrew Steben's track and field journey that took him farther than any other area athlete. For that and a laundry list of other accomplishments, the St. Francis High pole vaulter was voted the All-Area Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Despite vaulting to heights exceeding 14 feet, Steben and the pole vault were under the radar for most of the year. But this year, by the time the track and field season was coming to a close, all eyes were on Steben as he was the last athlete standing.

Jeff Tully Burbank High's Kyle Ivie wasn't the only local track and field athlete still in action last weekend. In fact, he wasn't even the only Bulldog still competing. Burbank freshman Carolyn Chrzan was in action in the girls' portion a high school pentathlon event held at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut. Taking part in a grueling seven-event competition Saturday and Sunday, Chrzan did well, finishing second among 12 freshmen. Although she worked very little in most of the event in preparation for the competition, Chrzan compiled 3,317 points, losing to a freshman champion who had 3,485.

BURBANK — Ralph Turner is revered as the finest track and field sprinter to come out of Burroughs High. However, after performing for the Indians, he went on to continued success at Glendale Community College and Brigham Young University. It is at Glendale college that Turner will receive recognition for his fine career with the Vaqueros. The ninth annual Glendale Community College Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held March 6 at the college’s J. Walter Smith Student Center, 1500 N. Verdugo Road, Glendale.

If everything goes as planned, aquatics athletes at Burbank High will have a new, state-of-the-art swimming pool to compete in this coming season. Too bad the Bulldog football players won't have the luxury of a playing in a new facility for their 2004 campaign. In fact, football players from Burbank, Burroughs and Bellarmine- Jefferson -- which play their games at the same venue -- will have to endure another season in an outdated, shabby and decrepit facility -- Memorial Field.

Carolyn Chrzan was facing the possibility of graduating from Burbank High without a coveted league championship. A four-year varsity standout for the Bulldog girls' soccer team, Chrzan toiled on squads that had trouble competing in the Foothill League, let alone coming close to a title. She also showed her prowess on the school's girls' track and field team, emerging as a scoring athlete in running and field events since she was a freshman. But she was never able to capture an individual league championship, despite qualifying for the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries every season.
