Ferreira -- Mehdizadeh Jennifer Ferreira of San Francisco, the daughter of Les and Cindi Ferreira of La Crescenta, and Pooyan Mehdizadeh of San Francisco, the son of Nasser and Mahvash Mehdizadeh of Pacific Palisades, have announced their engagement. The bride-to-be graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 1992. She received a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from UC Irvine and a degree in medicine from UC San Francisco. She is a surgery resident at UC San Francisco.

VARELA Shelley Renee Rutkoske and Jesus Varela Jr. of Aliso Viejo have announced their engagement and will marry in July in Laguna Beach. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Betty Rutkoske of Burbank. She graduated from UC Irvine with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and political science. She earned her master's in education and her reading specialist credential from Cal State Fullerton. She is employed as a first-grade teacher in Tustin. The bridegroom-to-be is the son of Maria and Jesus Varela of El Centro.

SPEEDIE - MCDONALD Anne Speedie and Justin McDonald exchanged wedding vows at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in San Francisco with the Rev. Steven Maekawa officiating. A reception followed at the Berkeley City Club, a state historical landmark designed by architect Julia Morgan, who designed Hearst Castle. Anne is the daughter of Helene Speedie of Glendale and Bill Speedie of Oregon. The bride graduated from Hoover High School in 1990. She graduated from UC Irvine in 1994 with a bachelor of arts degree in English and French literature, and was a member of Alpha Phi. She is employed as a writer at Digitas, an ad agency.

MACHUCA--RAMAZAN Triana Vargas Machuca of Burbank and Kevin Ramazan of Costa Mesa were married in a ceremony at The French Estate in Orange. The Rev. Dr. Paul C. Ystebo officiated. The maid of honor was Tani Vargas Machuca. Standing up for the bride was her brother, Michael Vargas Machuca. The best men were Charles Lee and Zhone Ping. Triana is the daughter of Sidney and Humberto Vargas Machuca of Burbank. She graduated from Notre Dame High School and received her bachelor's degree from UC Riverside.

CHU - HOLDER Estelle Chu and Stephen Holder have announced their plans to marry in June. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Sam and Elling Chu of West Hills. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Richard and Lupe Sonnie of La Canada Flintridge and is a graduate of La Canada High School. Paul Hoch of Littleton, Colo.

Jasmine Smith (Bellarmine-Jefferson High, 2012) freshman forward, San Jose State women's basketball : Despite coming off the bench in all 10 of the Spartans' games this season, Smith is making the most of her opportunities. In fact, she is the team's fourth-leading scorer as a reserve. Smith, an all-state player at Bell-Jeff, is averaging 12.4 points a game off the bench. In addition, she averages nine rebounds a contest. With five double-doubles in the last eight games, Smith ranks 26th in the nation in that category and leads the Mountain West Conference.

UC Irvine students have been trying a relatively new thing called “speed faithing.” The idea, much like speed dating, is to get as much information across to another person in a set amount of time, and hopefully make an impact. Religious students and two atheists gave their 10-minute talks to groups of UCI students, trying to distill their belief - whether Catholic, Mormon, Islamic or none - in a concise way, yet still making it understandable to those outside their faith. Speed faithing was developed by Chicago-based Interfaith Youth Core as a way of getting youngsters to interact with people of different faiths.
