Catherine M. Algiers, daughter of Joseph and Josephine Algiers of Burbank, will marry Anthony “Tony” R. Myers of San Diego, son of Jeanette Lowdon of Morocco, in July. Algiers graduated with a bachelor’s degree from UC San Diego. She also has a master’s degree in school psychology. She works as a school psychologist for the Newhall School District. Myers will graduate from UC San Diego in June with a degree in computer science. He will work for Qualcomm as a software engineer.

Bits and pieces from the local sports scene: Local 8-year-old wins California all-around championship : Resident Dylan Young can already call himself a state champion — and he’s only 8. Young, who attends Gymnastics Olympia in Van Nuys, won the Level 5 all-around title at the State Gymnastics Championships on March 14-15 in Riverside. He won the all-around crown with a score of 90.350, finishing ahead of Brandon Hsu of New Hope Gym (89.300)

LEWIS Milija and Jelena Tanaskovic of Burbank have announced the engagement of their daughter, Gordana Tanaskovic, to Dr. Alwin C. Lewis, the son of Dr. Arthur E. and Diana Lewis of Burbank. A June wedding is planned. The bride-to-be graduated from John Burroughs High School and from Cal State Northridge with a degree in business administration. She is employed as a marketing director for Chocolates a la Carte in Valencia. The bridegroom-to-be graduated from Burbank High School, UC San Diego and Tulane University Medical School.

HASTINGS — CIULLA Michael and Kathy Hastings, of Burbank, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Hastings, to Peter Matthew Ciulla, the son of Louis and Maureen Ciulla, of La Crescenta. The bride-to-be is a graduate of John Burroughs High School and Cal State Northridge. She works in special education with the Burbank Unified School District. The groom-to-be is a graduate of Loyola High School, did his undergraduate work at UC Riverside and received his master's degree in mechanical engineering from UC San Diego.

BOYD - GROEN Heather Boyd and Martin Groen were married in a civil ceremony at the Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana. A reception was held at Mr. Stox in Anaheim. The bride is the daughter of Gerald and Lucinda Boyd of Burbank. She graduated in 1987 from Burbank High School. She received a bachelor's degree in animal physiology and neuroscience from UC San Diego and a master's degree in environmental studies from Cal State Fullerton. She is employed as an environmental health specialist with the state of California.

Theo John Arbucci was accepted at Golden Gate University Law School in San Francisco for his postgraduate studies. He is aspiring to become an attorney. He graduated from UC San Diego with a bachelor's degree in political science and a minor in history, and was vice president of his fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa. His brother, Joseph Arbucci, is living his childhood dream of becoming a pilot. He received his private pilot's license at 15. He attended UCLA for two years, majoring in aerospace engineering, as an officer with Marine Corps ROTC.

John Muir Middle School hosted the second annual golf tournament on May 30 at De Bell Par 3 course and the participating schools were Muir, Luther Burbank and Jordan middle schools. The event is sponsored by the Magnolia Park Optimist Club. John Muir won the tournament two years in a row. Those from Muir participating were Andy Mouron, co-captain, Eric Thrasher Jr., co-captain and Con O'Conner. The Glendale/Burbank Area Alumnae Panhellenic has selected seven high school graduates and one college student as 2002 scholarship winners.

Cadet Kenneth William Wainwright Jr., son of Dr. Kenneth and Beatrice Wainwright of Burbank, has won the prestigious Marshall Scholarship at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. Wainwright has the opportunity to further his education for two years at a university of his choice in Britain. Wainwright, who attends West Point, will study Middle Eastern history at Durham University in England. He plans to follow a military career specializing in the Middle East and eventually teaching at West Point.
