Ryan Carter BURBANK -- On the eve of recognizing Christ's birth, a grieving father remembered his dead son. "I have no words," said Robert Cabrera, whose 12-year-old son, Kevin, died of massive internal injuries on Dec. 19. But as tears welled in Cabrera's eyes, words began to come. "He was a great son. Everybody knows he was. He was a great friend to me -- the best son in the world," he said. Friends, family, teammates and police officers grieved with Cabrera on Monday during a funeral service for Kevin, a burgeoning athlete who loved the Lakers.

Burbank student recognized by Rotary BURBANK VILLAGE -- Burbank High School student Jessica Corwin on Tuesday was named Student of the Month for December by the Burbank Noon Rotary Club. Jessica, 17, was recognized for her outstanding community service, leadership qualities and academic achievements, said Jeff Green, the club's chairman of youth services. The organization awarded the senior with a $25 gift certificate from Target and a certificate from the club during its weekly meeting at the Burbank Family YMCA.

ELIZABETH BELL BLACKWOOD Elizabeth Bell Blackwood, 80, died Feb. 17, 2003, in Riverside. Born May 12, 1922, in Llano, Texas, she was a longtime resident of Burbank who worked as a data processor at Stuart Pharmaceuticals for 30 years. She was involved with the Fun Over 40 Club in Burbank, the Pasadena Senior Center and was the treasurer of the Rosemead Center Dance Club. Mrs. Blackwood is survived by her son, Dan Blackwood; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

JANET PHILLIPS Janet Phillips died Dec. 19, 2004. She was 61. Ms. Phillips was born Oct. 11, 1943, in Hollywood, and was a resident of Burbank for most of her life. She retired from Wells Fargo Bank in Burbank after 31 years. Ms. Phillips was well-known in Burbank and was devoted to her children, granddaughters and career. She enjoyed helping, laughing, giving and being a good listener. Ms. Phillips is survived by her three daughters, Tina, Kari and Heidi; granddaughters, Cheyenne, Jordan, Sabrina and Bridgette; and siblings, Dan, Lori, Sharon and Vern.

By next summer, Burbank's major consumers of water - most schools, parks and studios - may all be irrigating with reclaimed water. Burbank Water and Power embarked on a plan in 2007 to install 100,000 additional feet of pipeline throughout the city to allow more customers, especially big ones, to use recycled water for their lawns, shrubs and trees. “Schools, parks, studios - the Recycled Water Master Plan wants us to serve all the major users in town,” said Matthew Elsner, a principal civil engineer in water services for BWP. “We wanted to get the major users.

BURBANK — Burbank Unified School District campuses may have to make some changes to their water systems at the district’s cost to join in the city’s effort for more efficient water use in the next few years. Schools have been included as potential users in the city’s recycled water master plan, said Matt Elsner, principal civil engineer for Burbank Water and Power. Burbank’s $12.3-million plan to lay a system of pipes carrying recycled water throughout the city was proposed in October at a Burbank City Council meeting.

A motorcade of police motorcycles, custom Harley-Davidsons, a black limousine and an 18-wheel tractor-trailer wound its way through Burbank Tuesday, roaring into Valhalla Memorial Park Tuesday with two special symbols of remembrance. The first was an urn containing the remains of Vietnam veteran Paul Haug, Jr., who died in January. The second was a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The wall travels to 12 to 14 venues throughout the year, giving people nationwide the chance to see a representation of the wall without having to travel across the country, said funeral home manager Javier Fernandez, who is chairman of the event and former member of the Marine Corps.

Paul Clinton CIVIC CENTER -- Far from ending the challenge, the passage of the Burbank Historic Preservation Plan merely sets the stage for much work to come, supporter's of the historic measure said this week. The Burbank City Council unanimously approved the plan Nov. 23, but its authors said they have a tough road ahead in crafting a detailed city policy that provides both for the restoration and identification of historic properties. Craig Bullock, chairman of the Burbank Historical Commission and the driving force behind the 34-page document, said the six-point plan is only a blueprint.

ROBERT ROY CLARK Robert Roy Clark, 74, died July 27, 2003, in Burbank. He was born Dec. 27, 1928, in Glendale and was a lifelong Burbank resident. He worked as a barber for 45 years. He was also a member of Elks Lodge 1497 and the Magnolia Park Masonic Lodge. Mr. Clark is survived by his wife, Pauline; sons, Joseph Dahlia, Ronald Dahlia, Angelo Dahlia and Norman Dahlia; daughter, Chris Rome; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 3801 Scott Road.

Charles Rich Dave Shurman, who recorded game film for the Glendale Community College football team for 11 years, died Wednesday at his Van Nuys home. He was 43. Shurman had been suffering from a kidney ailment, family members said. Shurman, who graduated from Burbank High in 1980 before briefly attending Glendale College, filmed most of Glendale College's football contests from 1986 to 1997. Born Aug. 16, 1962, in Los Angeles, Shurman managed the Burbank High baseball and boys' basketball teams from 1977-80.
