The Los Angeles Police Department sent its bomb squad Wednesday to an industrial building in Van Nuys that may be serving as an indoor marijuana farm, authorities said. Police responded around 5:15 a.m. to a building in the 15800 block of Stagg Street, just west of the 405 Freeway, after receiving a call from someone reporting an open door at the building, a sign of a possible burglary. A driver is facing a murder charge after crashing into two women standing at the side of a road in Van Nuys and fleeing the scene, police said Monday. The suspect, Alfonso Garnica-Mozgueda, 33, lost control of his Lexus on Erwin Street just west of Vesper about 9:25 p.m. Sunday and crashed into the women, who were standing next to a truck, police said. The 7-week-old daughter of one of the victims was inside the truck. Christina Lynn Ruvalcaba, 39, suffered major injuries and died at the hospital shortly after the crash.

A 27-year-old Burbank man was found guilty Monday afternoon of fatally stabbing his on-and-off girlfriend 19 times in her neck at a park. A jury in a Van Nuys courtroom found Stephen Joanou Jr. guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Patrina “Trina” Sabella, who was found dead on March 20, 2012. They also found true that he personally used a weapon to kill Sabella. Jurors began deliberating on Friday after hearing testimony and evidence in the case. Sabella, 32, was discovered in the early morning hours lying in a pool of her blood behind a shed in South Weddington Park in the 10600 block of Valleyheart Drive in Studio City.

An unlicensed Las Vegas woman involved in a high-speed police pursuit that ended in Burbank Saturday morning was arrested after crashing into 15 cars, according to California Highway Patrol. When a California Highway Patrol officer tried to pull over the 35-year-old for driving recklessly southbound on Highway 170 near Victory Boulevard around 10 a.m., the woman sped off, exiting at Burbank Boulevard, said California Highway Patrol Officer Christian Cracraft. The chase continued as the woman traveled eastbound on Burbank Boulevard in a red Dodge pickup truck, first crashing into one moving car and then four more as she sped near Hollywood Way, Cracraft said.

A Metrolink train struck a man late Friday afternoon, severing his arm and delaying evening commuters for more than an hour. The crash occurred about 4:15 p.m., shortly after the train had left the Burbank Airport station, the Los Angeles Times reported . [FOR THE RECORD: An earlier verision of this post stated in the headline that the man was struck in Burbank. If fact, he was hit within the city of Los Angeles. ] The man was walking west along the tracks on a rail bridge that carries the train over the 170 Freeway, said Sgt. Donald Kelly, watch commander for the LAPD Valley Traffic Division, which is investigating the accident.

Recently spared from closure, the popular aircraft mechanics school at Van Nuys Airport will receive a $25,000 donation this weekend to establish a scholarship fund for low-income students. The University of North Dakota Aerospace Foundation will present the donation during ceremonies Saturday evening at Clay Lacy Aviation, which is near the North Valley Occupational Center-Aviation Center. North Dakota "is home to one of the nation's top collegiate flight training programs and we're honored to show our support for one of the nation's top aircraft mechanics schools," said Larry Martin, board chairman of the foundation.

The Los Angeles City Council on Friday ordered local officials to develop a detailed plan to save a popular aircraft mechanics school at Van Nuys Airport. On a motion by Eric Garcetti, the council called on Los Angeles World Airports, the airport's operator, to find ways to preserve the North Valley Occupational Center-Aviation Center, which has trained thousands of mechanics during its 40-year history. The school, which is run by the Los Angeles Unified School District, is located off Hayvenhurst Avenue in a hangar with adjoining classrooms and workshops.

A popular vocational center at Van Nuys Airport that has trained thousands of aviation mechanics during its 40-year history faces closure or relocation next year if the Los Angeles Unified School District can no longer afford to keep the facility open. Educators, students, national organizations and business owners at the airport say the loss of the program would be a blow to those seeking technical careers in the aviation industry, which is already suffering a shortage of qualified entry-level mechanics.
