BELLARMINE-JEFFERSON HIGH — After not making the CIF Southern Section playoffs in nine years, the Bellarmine-Jefferson High boys' volleyball team was satisfied just to make the postseason last season. However, with eight returning players, the Guards have much higher expectations this season — like a league championship. The Guards realize that in competing for a league title, they have to be victorious in the matches they are supposed to win. Bell-Jeff did just that Monday, earning a Santa Fe League sweep against visiting Verbum Dei, 25-10, 25-14, 25-11, in a match that took just 44 minutes.

TullyBOYS' BASKETBALL Verbum Dei 70, BellarmineJefferson 46: Despite suffering a severe injury to his right eye, Guard senior Boran Rajic had 17 points and six blocked shots in the Santa Fe League game Friday on the road. Rajcic, a 6-foot-8 transfer from Serbia and Montenegro, was scratched in the eye by a Verbum Dei player in the first quarter. Although he had to leave the game, he returned and tried to keep Bell-Jeff (10-12, 3-6 in league) in the game. Bell-Jeff Coach Eli Essa said Rajcic, who is averaging 22.5 points, 12.7 rebounds and 6.4 blocked shots a game, suffered a scratch to his cornea and has had to seek medical attention.

BURBANK - The Providence High boys' basketball squad was in the game for the entire contest against visiting Verbum Dei in a nonleague matchup that would determine if the Pioneers would stay above .500 for the season. However, the Pioneers were unable to get over the hump Monday night, as the Eagles used their superior size inside to hold the home team off before pulling away at the free-throw line and earning a 49-39 win against Providence. "It's an athletic team from Dei. They've got some size and physicality," first-year Providence Coach Chris Madigan said.

Magallon cuts tall trees down to size Bellarmine-Jefferson High boys' basketball player Matt Magallon was hard to spot on the court Wednesday during a Santa Fe League game against L.A. Verbum Dei at Bell-Jeff. Magallon, a junior who is generously listed on the Guards' roster at 5 feet 5, looked like a sapling among forest of redwoods that make up the Eagles' team. Along with a 6-10 player, Verdum Dei also has two 6-8 forwards and one 6-6 athlete who comes off the bench.
